Private Helicopter Flight to the 12 Apostles

About this experience

By road, the Twelve Apostles are about 3 hours from Melbourne each way. By helicopter it is a 1 hour 15 minute flight. You meet at Rotor One, Hangar 7, Wirraway Road, at Essendon Fields, take photos in front of the helicopter, then fly over the countryside to the coast. The listing promises noise-cancelling headsets and a guaranteed window seat, and the whole aircraft is private for your group of up to five.

You see the golden stacks and the white surf from the air, then make a private landing at the Twelve Apostles helipad. There you get 2 hours of free time. The listing suggests walking down Gibson Steps to the beach (the parks authority opens the 86 steps when conditions allow) or heading to the Castle Rock lookout for photos. You arrive by air, so there is no car to park. The flight home follows the Great Ocean Road back towards Melbourne.

The from-price of $2,248 is for one adult; check the live price for your group. All four reviews are five stars, and guests name pilots Ruben and Harry. If low cloud, heavy rain or high wind stops the flight, the operator reschedules, or gives a full refund if you cancel. Free cancellation runs up to 3 days before. There is no hotel pickup, so plan your own way to Essendon Fields.

Tips before you book

  • Book with weather in mind. Free cancellation closes 3 days before, but the operator reschedules or refunds if the weather grounds the flight.
  • Plan transport to Essendon Fields. There is no hotel pickup, and the meeting point is Hangar 7 on Wirraway Road.
  • Wear shoes with grip if you want Gibson Steps. The 86 steps are steep, and at high tide most of the beach is under water.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen and water for your 2 hours on the ground. The cliff tops have little shade.
  • Want to know what you are looking at from the air? Our guide to the stacks explains why seven of nine still stand.
